Why are we afraid of symptoms?
Why are we really afraid of the symptoms that the body generates and why are we so afraid of pain? What is pain? Who is it for? Let’s imagine that we are driving our car and suddenly a little red light goes on. We look again and report to ourselves: a red light went on. What should we do? We’ll ask ourselves, what is it connected to? Is it the oil light that’s signaling that we’re low on oil or maybe we’re low on fuel? Is a door open, or did something go wrong in the electrical system? Why is it signaling? If we see that it’s the fuel light, we’ll probably go to the nearest gas station and fill up. If a light connected to the engine goes on, or a light that we don’t identify or recognize - we’ll probably pull over, lift the engine hood and check what’s going on. If we are not a technision , we’ll call an expert to tell us what we should do. In any case, the red light will cause us to stop our routine and take a pause.
When our body is in question, we don’t treat it in the same way. Imagine that when the red light goes on while we’re driving we say: Oh, oh, that damn red light went on, we need to turn it off. We’ll take a hammer and smash the light? Now the light is off and we can continue driving. Everything is okay. Sounds funny? Ridiculous? Our attitude towards pain is exactly the same! Exactly! Our head hurts? Oh boy, I have a headache. Should I take Advil or Tylenol? Does my stomach hurt? Now? Right before I have to go to work? Now, when I have an important event? It doesn’t work for me now. This is really a bad time. Well, it’s never a convenient time for us and we want to smash the red light. But let’s take the headache as an example. Why did our body decide to bother us with a headache right now? Does it have something against us? Is it acting against our interests? Isn’t it signaling something important? Maybe we have a lot of built up tension? Maybe we didn’t drink enough? Maybe we were out in the sun for too long? Maybe we didn’t sleep enough, or maybe we ate something bad, or maybe something more serious is going on… Why would we want to stop the pain? Even our car is sent by us to get fixed, every once in a while, according to the manufacturer’s car manual. Why don’t we send ourselves? Why do we complain that we hurt somewhere, instead of being happy that the monitoring system of the body works properly? Let’s start making friends with our bodies. If we hurt, it means that there is something inside our body that wants to communicate with us. It means that something wants to alert us and call our attention to it. Instead of silencing and suppressing our communication with it, we’ll develop our ability to listen to what it’s saying. You’ll be surprised just how quickly the body relaxes when it’s convinced that we listen to signals it creates. Our body roots for us. If we hurt it means that something has to change, something inside the body needs fine-tuning. Let’s put our car aside, lift the engine hood and begin a process of connecting and making friends with the closest person to you, literally, with ourselves.
